self-assigned IP Issue with LAN

I have a new Macbook M1. At first the Ethernet was working fine, but now it will not connect. The specific error says "USB 10/100/1000 LAN has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet."

My wireless is fine, this is just the ethernet (I am using a docking device).

Deleting files, creating a new connection, resetting the network settings, restarting, adding DNS addresses. Nothing is working. Any suggestions?

Have you tried one of the less obvious solutions, like

using a different/new ethernet cable? Even if plugged in and

left plugged in they can fail (had this happen on a MacMini

that hadn't been moved or unplugged for several years.

Figured it out. It was the docking station. Unplugging it and plugging it back in fixed the issue.

For reference, it was a Saferell docking station purchased through Amazon.

make sure you run all OS updates, as the most recent one fixes subc devices that are plugged into m1 macs (cheap knockoffs are bricking the laptops)
