all new apps don't appear on home screen

For every new app I install, it doesn't appear on the home screen. It shows up in a spotlight search, and I can open the app from there, but the icon never shows up on the home screen.

The only thing that works is resetting the home screen layout, but that only works for currently installed apps. After I install a new app, it again won't appear on the home screen.

iphone 8 plus, ios 14.4

Super maddening, driving me bananas. Please help if you can!

That did it! I don't know how the setting for "Newly Downloaded Apps: App Library Only" got checked, but when I changed it to "Add to Home Screen", now new apps are appearing.

Thanks much - I was close to embedding the phone in the drywall.
