iMac 27 and MacBook Pro

Can I use my old iMac 27 mid 2011 as an external display for a MacBook Pro 2020 M1?

If I do, how to to do it? What cables do I need?

The above answer is correct.


Your MacBook Pro M1 2020 supports one external monitor.


Your MacBook Pro M1 2020 does not support the target display path required with the iMac intended here.


Use an external monitor.


Maybe use the iMac as a display for something else.


A 2020 or newer Mac will not work as a source for this:
