How do I delete mail

My mail is taking 161 GB of storage on my computer. I have a gmail account but use the Mac mail program. I need to free up storage as only have 1.99 GB of storage because mail is using it up. I can use gmail on line google account and free up storage but how do I get the mail off my hard drive?
