I have an older mackbook pro 2012, and I'm told I can't upgrade to big sur.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.14

Try the Catalina link in this Apple article.

⚠️ Be sure to use Safari. Firefox is not working propelry with Apple system update links.
