Why is Apple saying my iPhone 6 is up to date with version 12.5 when they have released a critical update to version 14.4 which does not show for install?

I noted today that Apple has a new critical update to version 14.4. I installed it on my iPad. Tried to install it on iPhone 6+ but phone says version 12.5 is up to date. Can’t install 14.4 on phone as it is not available. Apple “ how to” site says 14.4 IS available.

How? The iPhone 6 was released in September 2014, when 1 GB of RAM was a lot for smartphones. The 6 was released with iOS 8. How could Apple have known back then that iOS 13 and 14 would require atleast 2 GBs of RAM?

12.5.1 is the last for your iPhone 6 (as of now), if you want iOS 14.4, you'll need a current-gen iPhone.

Thank you. However, many of their updates were non security related adding lots of bells and whistles that ate up ram. At the price of new phones, never, never. Totally insane. I only use mine for backpacking and photos anyway. My wife.....she has the problem of a new phone or not. Thanks again.

The 6 Plus was released 6 1/2 years ago.

It was discontinued 4 1/2 years ago.

That's a lifetime in the world of computers, especially portable computers, which is basically what the iPhone is.

This is exactly the trouble with people who have grown up using computers and smartphones and were never educated as to how they work.... You expect the impossible and take it as some kind of personal insult when something that's 6 years old isn't capable of running the latest greatest operating system.

It wasn't possible to build a device 6 years ago that was capable of running todays operating system. Not without making it ridiculously unaffordable or monstrously large or both.

You are welcome. FYI, the current iPhone SE starts at 399$, and an used iPhone 6s (which does support the latest version) is way cheaper than that.
