Mail won't open

In Mac OSX Catalina, mail won't open. Icon bounces once then stalls before opening. Mail icon shows unread messages but the application won't open.

iMac 27″, macOS 10.15

Mail opening unexpectedly After upgrading from El Capitan to Catalina, Mail occasionally opens unexpectedly while I'm doing something else, and sometimes when it's in Sleep Mode behind the screen saver or black screen. It happens maybe once a day or so. It's not a big problem because I just click it off with the red dot, but I'm curious about what's going on, and how to calm it down.

"Mail" Preference Pane will not open in MAC OS Catalina 10.15.6 My Apple Mail seems to work normal... however I cannot open the "Preference Pane". When I try it makes Apple Mail freeze and stop working. I have to hit Command, Option, Delete... to try again to open mail

Try this:

Force quit Mail
Open Mail while holding the shift key
