I am trying to erase the hard drive on my iMac that I am trading in; however, the erase button is not available. It is grayed out. How do I proceed from here?

FWIW, you have to be in Recovery Mode to erase an internal drive.

You must boot into the Recovery Partition and use Disk Utilities there. Please hold down the Command key and the R key on startup to get into the Recovery Partition.
The erase button is not available. It is grayed out, so I can’t erase my iMac’s hard drive.
