syncing iPhone 12 with my MacBook Air

I recently got an iPhone 12 and want to sync it with my MacBook. The phone is from my son and on his carrier plan. Could this create an issue as to syncing/pairing? I want to access my Apple Music account and get my music on my phone. I am technology short, handle most basics but other than that....
