When I install, it seems to be fine, I tried to update but it never successfully went through. It went completely black, like shut off. When I powered on it would show the apple logo for less than 10 secs then go completely black. The only resolution was to put it in recovery and then use the previous os system. Am I going to be able to update to Big Sur? What is going on? apple support was not helpful

Did you iMac power off? There are times during the upgrade/installation process where the screen will go black. How long have you waited while the screen was black before pressing the power button? It could be more than a few minutes before you see activity again.
yes I have plenty of space, I only use this computer to watch Hulu and YouTube and its a 2019 iMac so yes compatible
