It means there is no valid boot drive available either because macOS or the file system is damaged or more likely the hard drive has failed.


Depending on the exact model of your Mac you will need to boot from a retail version of an OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD installer. If you have a MBPro, then you can boot from a macOS 10.11 USB installer. Then you can try running Disk Utility First Aid on the drive if it is even available.
