Texting on apple watch

Do i have to have a phone number to be able to text on my apple watch. Because currently i do not have a phone number on my phone but am looking for an apple watch, i was wondering if not having a phone number would stop me from being able to text on the apple watch

It will use the same number as your iPhone.

You must have your watch connected to your cellular plan by your provider.

If you are not on cellular you would use your iPhone's communications.
