when I go to edit a clip I find I have to click out of the timeline to get any response. Then when clicking the crop option all the sub options fail to come up and the crop box isn't there. I am used to move but this problem is recent ? is this a new problem for others ?

If you have recently updated it is possible that the issues you are experiencing relate to the update. Many posters on this forum have complained of such things as absence of transitions, disappearance of the duration label on clips, exporting problems, green screen issues, etc.
Try these procedures in order and see if any of them help:
Deleting Preferences
Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.
Resetting the System Management
Controller
Try resetting the System Management Controller:

Resetting the NVRAM or PRAM
