I want to update macOS from High Sierra to macOS Catalina. When I go to check for updates it says it's up to date which, it obviously is not. I tried to download and install from the app store but, it stopped unexpectedly. I have plenty of storage so I don't understand the issue. Help please!

Yes, I would consider having 98GB available “plenty of storage”. It was originally given to my mom brand new in the box but, she gave it to me to use for school because she has never used a Mac before, so there is nothing on the computer besides what had originally came preinstalled.
Are you connected to your router via cable always the best way when downloading from Apple.
If you can only use WiFi make the mac as close to the router as possible.
Do not use the mac while it is downloading or any other devices that share the same internet connection.
"plenty of storage" should be at least 20GB.
