I have a MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011). Currently I have 10.12.16, Sierra, installed. I would like to install High Sierra. I keep all of my documents on Google Drive so there is nothing to lose. I do want to keep Word on my computer. Therefore, I think I can and download High Sierra without wiping the computer clean. Is there any reason I should wipe it clean beforehand?

If there is nothing you need, no. You mentioned continuing with WORD, unless you have an installer backed up, you might want to make a backup.

Look into the Free LibreOffice, it handles MS Office files like Word & Excel…
