external monitor and webcam
I was wondering if it is possible to use an external monitor's webcam instead of the macbook pro webcam when connected? if so, any guidance would be appreciated.

Yes, of course. Depending on what MBPro you're owning (does it have USB2-3 or USB-C ports), the answer is: NORMALLY yes. You then have to move to the Control Panel and choose which audio-video input you prefer ("built-in" or webcam). Some apps may not read this setting and you may need to choose the same setting into them but I don't see a great problem with an external webcam.
PS: just check the webcam is an UVC/UVA compatible protocol but nowadays they al should.
