Brand new Apple Watch doesn't have enough space for iOS update

I have had my brand new Apple Watch 3 for fewer than two weeks and even though I've only downloaded one (1) app, and deleted several others, I'm told the watch does not have enough space to download the latest iOS update. Is this a joke? Does someone have a recommendation for getting around this?
