First off, your Mac only supports up to 4K. To connect, you’d need a mini-DisplayPort to XX adapter, depending on the displays input(s) – DisplayPort, HDMI, etc. If the display has only USB-C, you need the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to -2 adapter and a USB-C cable.

Thanks @neuroanatomist. I have a Mac Book Pro as well, which supports 5k and works fine, so this is for my son's MacBook Air.

I have a Apple Thunderbolt 3 to -2 adapter, which would plug into the display, so wondered if I need an Apple Thunderbolt Cable to connect from the MacBook Air to the adaptor? Is that what you mean?
