Using new apple watch

I'm looking to get my daughter an apple watch so she can communicate with us when out and about. I have an old iPhone 6 that is not connected. Do I have to get a phone line for that iPhone in addition to the cellular line for the watch?

Any new Apple Watch will require an iPhone 6s or newer. You won't be able to connect an Apple Watch to an iPhone 6 unless you can find an older one that hasn't been updated to watchOS 6.

As an Apple Watch cellular requires an active SIM in an iPhone to work over cellular, you'll need a compatible phone and the phone will need to be activated.

The Watch's plan is an add-on to the iPhone's plan. It'a usually $10 or $15 depending on the company.

I doubt any of them will give you the watch plan alone.
