iPod Touch suddenly cannot keep a charge (iOS 13.5.1)

It can charge normally, but 2 weeks ago, it loses the charge completely within 1/2 day. This was not a slowly developing issue. It just started happening. Did not drop the unit, did not get wet, not left out in the sun, not frozen, etc.
