Note that a few months ago an update to tvOS changed the way the Remote wakes up the ATV - you need to press the Menu button to wake the ATV. When first encountered this change I thought the Remote was not working as the ATV no longer woke to the touch pad.

Otherwise go through the troubleshooting steps such as making sure the Remote is charged.
