Further details:
In System Preferences > About This Mac it says mine is "iMac 27-inch, Late 2012". Ancient I know, but when I check compatibility requirements for MacOS Catalina, that is on the list as the oldest one that is OK. However ... I am currently on OSX El Capitan (OS 10.11.6) and when I check for Software Updates it tells me "No Updates available". So I cannot see any way to update. This is all because I want to instal Microsoft 365, which requires OS 10.13.0 or later.
Open this page in Safari. Download Catalina from there.
You have to open the above page while in Safari. Then click on Get macOS Catalina
Unfortunately it didn't help. That's the link that led me to the steps above.
