how do I delete the short videos that are created when i take a photo with my iphone?

That is the Live Photos feature that you may be talking about. You can disable that feature when you take a photo.
You can turn that feature OFF (or ON) by opening Camera app and then tapping on the Live Photo icon. It is located at the top right corner. See image Below-
