i hooked up a wireless keyboard and external display and set the monitor to mirror, but the wireless keyboard will not type on my external monitor, just on the laptop screen. how do i set it up to type on the external monitor also?

When you mirror your MacBook's screen to an external monitor then you should see the same content on BOTH screens. You should be able to type, and work simultaneously on both screens.
What if you use the external monitor in extended mode by unchecking Mirror the screens? Can you then drag the working windows from your MacBook's screen to your external monitor and then work on your external monitor? Let us know.
