Update from Yosemite to Catalina

Whenever I try to update my macbook pro mid-2012, the app store tells me there are no updates available. From what I've read this is probably untrue.

What's the best way to update from yosemite to catalina?

If you're running Yosemite, it won't show up in updates. You need to go to the store and install Catalina from there.
