I am upgrading my iPhone and would like to use it right away. Apple is unable to help set up my phone with my current carrier and I was curious if it would be ok to use the same SIM card that is in my iPhone 8 for my new iPhone 11? I have heard it could damage the new phone, is that the case?

Both, iPhone 8 and iPhone 11 use the same SIM card size, namely Nano-SIM card. That makes them compatible. Switching cards is done all the time and will not damage the phone. The cards are tiny, so do take care with them - they are delicate.

If you use a CDMA carrier, you will have to contact them to activate it. Note that they are NOT obligated to activate the phone on their network if you did not purchase it through them.
