How to block spam messages/texts on iPhone 8?

How do I block the many spam messages/text I receive daily on iPhone 8? Can I set a preference so I only receive messages/texts from people I know (or like)?

Add on to the above question: I receive these spam messages on all my devices, and assume that if I block unwanted spam on one device it be will blocked on all devices. That would be a good thing. If Apple does not have such a 'feature' are there compatible apps that will accomplish this daily annoying harassments?
