problems with music app in Catalina

Hi - I've just upgraded to Catalina, and I can't seem to add songs to playlists on the Mac Music app. I can add them via my iPhone, and they sync across perfectly. But if I add them on the Mac, the song appears in the playlist then immediately disappears!

Help please!

Make sure it is a regular playlist (note icon). If it is a smart playlist (gear icon) it will fill itself according to the rules.
