Donating my old iMac

Is it safe to donate my old iMac desktop to Goodwill? It is too outdated for trade in. I don’t have a shipping box so won’t spend money for one (or UPS) to send to Apple. If I erase my internal hard disk will it be safe to donate to Goodwill right here in my town?
