Sound is muted and flushed to right channel every time on start-up

I'm not sure when this started happening, but whenever I turn on my macbook air, the sound is muted and flushed to the right channel. This happens even when i shut down the computer with sound on and balanced sound. I still can hear the start-up chime though. I'm using macOS High Sierra, MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012).

Similar questions

Macbook sound muted and no output devices shown when going into system preferences in sound. My Macbook's sound is not working, the sound is muted and I am unable to uncheck the mute in system preferences and there are no output devices shown when going into sound of the system preferences. MacBook Air a2337 startup noise when I go to settings and turn off startup sound the computer turns it back on by itself.

Sound cuts out on Mac Studio My Mac Studio Computer has been connected to the Studio Display for over two months now and has worked perfectly. Starting today any sound has worked for only a few seconds before cutting out. This happens regardless if I am using my the Computers speaker or the Studio Display Speakers. I have restarted the computer several times. Checked sound output in System Preferences. It is not on mute. Have no clue

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

Try resetting the SMC.

How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

If that doesn't work, try resetting NVRAM.
