i am trying to connect an external monitor for extending my desktop on a MacBook and I looked it up on the apple site, however the "arrange" option doesn't appear when I go into displays in system preferences. When I plug in the monitor via hdmi, it causes mine to flicker and then go dark.

yes those are the ones -- in the first part of the instructions about turning on extended desktop mode, I don't see an option for "arrange" -- it only shows the built-in retina display option
i think the problem is that when i plug in the external monitor my screen goes dead so i can't go to system prefs. perhaps there is a problem w the external -- it is from 2014
