Is it possible to add an external backup drive to my iPad?

While iPad supports external hard disks, iPad does not support backing up to an external hard disk.

You connect an external drive to the iPad sure, but there is no backup option on the iPad to an external drive, only to iCloud.

You would have to manually copy files and data to the drive to back them up.
