Apple mail slow

I am running MacOS El Capitan 10.11.6

My Apple Mail application has become painfully slow in deleting, downloading, and moving messages to mailboxes for filing. I get a continual message that x of x messages are being moved and it takes several minutes to move one message.

I have one IMAP email account.

Is there any way of fixing this problem?

Thanks for the help. The problem was with my e-mail providers server and has now been repaired.
