My password doesn't work at the login screen

My password doesn't work when I'm trying to log in. After restarting my laptop it suddenly works. What could be the problem? I've changed passwords, because I thought the problem is with my keyboard that it switches between QWERTZ and QWERTY layouts, but the letters my current password contains are located the same way on both QWERTZ and QWERTY layout. It's really annoying that it takes me at least 1 restart to log in successfully. I have a macbook air 2017 and I'm using Catalina.

It never hurts to try an SMC reset and a PRAM reset (hold the PRAM reset for at least three chimes or a full minute if the laptop doesn't chime).

There is a possibility that you will need to have Apple remap the Keyboard and Trackpad for you. The MBAirs must have this remapping performed whenever the Keyboard or Trackpad are replaced. It basically sets the keyboard type of the laptop. One of our organization's MBAirs had a keyboard issue that was fixed by this remapping. An Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider can do this for you. Maybe this was never done originally or perhaps this mapping has gotten corrupted.

The only other thing I can think of is to delete any keyboard preferences and localization preferences in case the preference file is corrupted. There is a keyboard preference file in the hidden User Library Preferences ("~/Library/Preferences") which can be accessed by Option-clicking on the Finder's "Go" menu and selecting "Library", then navigate to the "Preferences" folder and look for a "com.apple" .plist file for the keyboard.

I'm not sure where the localization preference file is located, but it would be in the system area of macOS. Maybe another contributor will be able to assist here.

Maybe you could try it with a new user account:

You can also make sure to have a good system backup then perform a clean install of macOS by first erasing the whole physical drive before reinstalling macOS. Make sure to test the laptop before installing, migrating, or restoring anything from a backup. If you have a problem with the clean install, then you have some sort of hardware issue.

The keyboard works perfectly though, it only causes some troubles at the login screen.

Be careful with making assumptions. I've seen some really odd macOS behavior when it comes to hardware issues. I've personally seen an Apple laptop keyboard work to log me in, but as soon as I was logged in the keyboard stopped working. The keyboard works perfectly fine with Linux (and I've heard Windows too). Makes absolutely no sense and implies a software issue, but after having the Logic Board replaced everything was fine. I've seen a couple other posts on these forums where people have issues with their keyboard only after logging into macOS.

At least an external keyboard may allow you to use the laptop normally. If an external USB keyboard has the same problem, then most likely you have a software or preference issue. Any standard USB keyboard should work for testing even if it is a Windows keyboard.

Another test would be to change the login screen so that you must type your user name as well instead of having the user names displayed. This way you can see what the keyboard is typing at the login screen.

From what I've seen, my keyboard changes between the US keyboard and my native language's keyboard (Hungarian). Once I tried to make a new password at the login screen, because I thought that would solve my problem and whileI was doing so I saw that my keyboard switched to the QWERTY layout (for example when I typed Y in Z showed up, etc.) I just don't understand why. It's a relatively new laptop, I bought it last summer, I still have a warranty on it.
