stuck imac

My older iMac got stuck trying to install OS X El Capitan. Cannot get back to the original OS X.

reinstall OS onto an old iMac Hi I have a 2009 iMac model A1224, which we want to use just for emails and web browsing. I ran the Recovery utility to re install the OS, and that is trying to install El Capitan. The disk image has downloaded and it starts the install process, but gets to a point and then displays a message on the screen that the OS cannot be installed. I would be grateful for any assistance to trying to get this OS installed Many thanks Alex

Boot to your Recovery HD, restart the mac while pressing and holding the Command and R keys.

When booted up click on Disk Utility and run First Aid on the disk.

When you get the green tick, reboot your mac as normal and try installing El Capitan again.
