How do I connect my mid 2011 macbook pro with a mini displayport to my late 2014 iMac that doesn't have a mini display port?

The late 2014 iMac is too new (mid 2014 is the last to support Target Display Mode) and your MacBook Pro doesn't have Thunderbolt, which is needed if the iMac has Thunderbolt.

Thank you Malcolm. I was hoping there was a way to go out of the mini DisplayPort and use an adapter to go into the Thunderbolt port.
There are no such adapters.
What if I went mini displayport to hdmi, then hdmi to thunderbolt?
