How to use a MacAir(2013) as an external display?

I would like to connect my 2013 Mac Air as an external display with a new iMac. Which adapter or cable should I use?

The Mac Air has a thunderbolt port and the new iMac has thunderport 3.

Can I use an iMac as a display by connecting to a Mac mini HDMI? I have a 21.5 inch iMac, late 2012 with h 4 USB 3 and 2 Thunderbolt ports. (Not sure if Thunderbolt 1 or 2.) I believe only a small number of iMac models supported being a display. None of the Mac notebooks support this.
