How can I remove old email account from iCloud settings?

I rarely use iCloud but want to square it up with proper settings in sync, but on my desktop iMac it is still associating it with an email address(earthlink) that I haven't used in years. When I open iCloud preferences on said desktop, it won't let me click the 'account details' button to change it...

How do I delete this email once and for all?

Have you tried clicking the Sign Out button at the the bottom to sign out? You can then sign in with the desired Apple ID. Have you checked System Preferences/Internet Accounts to see if the address is listed there?
