"Esc" key has mysteriously disappeared?

I have a 13 inch Macbook pro (2018) which has been working fine for a while now... but a few weeks ago (not coinciding with any updates or anything that I'm aware of) the "esc" key on the left end of my touchbar simply stop being there... everything else on the touchbar works as expected. It simply isn't there regardless of the app I'm using or in the default mode. I've looked around in the settings and haven't found any luck... suggestions?
