Does Photos have to be running to upload photos library from Mac to iCloud?

I have set my wife’s late 2009 iMac to upload the Photos library to iCloud. Will it upload the library in in the background, or does the Photos app need to be running? Is there any upload speed difference? I have fairly fast broadband, and a decent router.

The application doesn't need to be open to sync with iCloud. I have never noticed a difference in upload speed with the application being open or closed. The photos sync is very, very slow. People with large Libraries have posted it took 2 weeks or more to complete the sync. If you interrupt the sync, it starts over at the beginning.

Thanks! It is very slow, and all the files must transfer cleanly. I had "error 36" problems with corrupt photo files, which stops the sync. I tracked them down by copying (to an external drive) the individual "Masters" files one year at a time; that way the error 36 dialog identifies the specific picture causing the error. I was finally able to duplicate the Photos Library file all at once with no errors, and I'm hoping this means the Library is clean enough to upload and sync with the iCloud library.

This was easier than it sounds once I blundered into the method. I'm sure there's a utility or more efficient technique, but I'm not a pro.
