i recently bought a used macbook air(13-inch, Mid 2013) its current software is yosemite 10.10.5 and there are not any available updates showing under updates. Is it even possible to get the latest update?

The problem is that the seller didn't properly prepare the Mac for sale. You can do it yourself and then get up and running the latest OS that is attached to YOUR Apple ID What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support
