What if you already have a subscription? Does it cancel that?

When you take advantage of the free 1 year offer, how is your already-in-force subscription handled?

I had to send proof of purchase of a new Apple device. The tech had to cancel the old subscription. We had to decide how to address my multiple Apple IDs. He had to send a redemption code. I had to enter it under the correct Apple ID. We had to be sure family sharing was on.
