My MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) running Catalina, 10.15.2 won't recognise any USB drive that I plug in. It shows in About This Mac > System Report and on Disk Utility (but won't mount), and won't appear in Finder or the Desktop. Everything was fine immediately before updating - as I used USB drives to backup my files.

Thanks. I tried both suggestions, but to no avail. All hard disks and external disks are checked. My friend's Mac which hasn't been updated is showing the USB drive, so it's definitely not a fault with it.

Try -
Shut down completely.
Unplug USB
Then boot up while holding Shift key down throughout. (May take linger than usual)
Then when booted fully release Shift snd do a normal restart
And you visited Finder Preferences : General panel and ensured that Hard disks, and External disks were checked so that they would appear on the Desktop?
How are they formatted? (Exfat, FAt32 etc)
Since updating to Catalina, USB drives not recognised
