Hi,

The following procedure applies only to home movies, like yours, that you created yourself with no copyrights involved. It would be a violation of copyright laws to use the procedure to access the video files from a commercially made DVD.

The procedure to remove home movies from a a DVD is as follows: Insert your DVD into your connected optical drive. Click on the DVD icon when it appears on your desktop, to reveal the contents folder. You will see a VIDEO_TS folder and an AUDIO_TS folder. Click on the VIDEO_TS folder to open it. Ignore the AUDIO_TS folder.

In the VIDEO_TS folder you will see one or more files with a VOB extension. The VOB files comprise your movie. Ignore the others. Copy, not move, the VOB files to your desktop. From your desktop, use the free download, Handbrake, to convert them to H.264, Mp4/AAC files. Handbrake will do that by default. Then drag the converted files into the timeline of an iMovie project. You can edit them there and export them out as an iMovie video.
