how do i bypass the activation lock on my iphone when the password is forgotten

You can't. You can give your friend this link and she needs to recover her Apple ID and Password --> If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
If she is unable to recover her password, the ONLY way Apple will help her is for her to show Apple the original purchase receipt with the iPhone serial number on the receipt. Then and only then will Apple help. If she can't do that and she is unable to recover the password, the phone is useless.
