When I start a new text and type in “Dan,” whom is in my contacts with his number and his wife’s number under the same contact it will combine the text message now? I’ve tried to separate them as separate contacts but the same thing happens? This all started after the last 2 IOS updates.

Do they share an Apple ID? If they do, that could be causing this behavior. It started with iOS 12.
They do not share an Apple I.D.
