Popping noises in iMovie

Whenever I import camera video or phone video to edit in iMovie, iMovie introduces crackling/popping noises that are NOT there in the original audio. Before importing, playing the movie in some other software like Quicktime, the sound is fine, but as soon as I import to iMovie the crackle appear. I've tried many things. It is NOT cause by anything I do in iMovie because the crackles appear as soon as I import, before I do ANY editing. It happens for all movies and it happens whether I import to my timeline or to the other project window. Please help!!!

There may be something about the codec, or the rendering of it, used in the clip, that iMovie doesn't like. iMovie likes the AAC audio codec. Sometimes the Mp3 codec has some issues. The issue could be specific to iMovie, and Final Cut Pro that uses many of the same codecs, that would explain why the clip works everywhere else.

To test, try using a video converter like the free download Handbrake to convert the video clip to Mp4/AAC that Handbrake will do by default. Do this even if the clip is already Mp4/AAC. Sometime re-encoding clears up some glitches. You can get Handbrake here:

Try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if the popping noise issue is cured.

If still no luck, try redownloading iMovie. To do that, drag your iMovie app from the Applications folder into the Trash, but don't empty the trash. Then sign into the online app store (Apple Logo/App Store) with your Apple I.D. and password. Open your app store account by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. Review your purchases that will be displayed. iMovie should be there. Redownload it from there. If for some reason the download is unsuccessful or unavailable, drag your iMovie app from the trash and place it back in the Applications folder. Assuming a successful redownload, see if the popping noise issue is solved.

Hi Rich. Thanks for your detailed reply but neither of those options worked. In both cases, creating a new library, reloading the videos from my hard drive... all produce the same popping noises. It's interesting that they seem to appear in the same spot although I haven't tested that exactly.

As another possibility, I purchased Final Cut Pro assuming that would fix this problem. It did not! I get the same pops in Final Cut Pro. Then I spent most of yesterday downloading trial versions of MANY other video editors that work on Macs (Adobe Premier, Movavi, Wondershare Filmore9, MovieMator, Lightworks). NONE of them have these pops!!!! I also confirmed over and over that there are no pops in the raw videos by playing the movies in Quicktime...

As a last resort, just now I tried using iMovie on my MacBook Pro. (The problems above occurred on my iMac desktop.) I find exactly the same problem with pops on my laptop!! This is the first time I ever used iMovie on my laptop so it can't be anything with settings. All of this makes me think the problem is unique to Apple and the codec or something that they are using...

If you have other suggestions, please let me know. Otherwise, it looks like I'll be moving on to some non-Apple editing software.

That worked!!!! It's interesting that I first noticed this problem a few weeks ago. Also a few weeks ago I purchased a new Google Pixel 4 phone and it is video from that phone I'm working with now. Maybe this is another example of Google and Apple fighting and/or not talking to each other. I don't know. But thanks very much for your help!!!
