Apple Watch connecting to new iPhone

I got a new iPhone. My Apple Watch would not pair and when I got it to pair it says it will need an Apple Watch update. I’ve tried restarting my phone and watch still not working. On the Watch app on my phone it says the update is installing and has been for the last hour and a half. What may it be?

Did you remove the old phone from icloud?.And the activation lock on the watch that links it to your old phone?.
