Audio only editing won't add cross dissolve between clips to get rid of pops

Here's a video showing what happens. There is plenty of pre and post roll for the transition, it just won't add. It did work with 10.4.7 but then just stopped working, but I was able to copy and past a short cross dissolve in these situations...any ideas? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maHRGsCMcD0&feature=youtu.be

Delete Preferences: hold down command and option while starting FCP X and click Delete Preferences. Reopen your library and try again. Odds are it will work.
