iPad restore

I followed the directions on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306,

"Press and hold the Side (or Top) button until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off your device. Connect your device to your computer while holding the Home button. Keep holding the Home button until you see the recovery mode screen."

I can turn the iPad off, but when I connect the device to my computer while holding the Home button, nothing happens. I held the button for 5 minutes. Intuitively holding the Home button after the device has been turned off doesn't make sense, so I tried turning it back on and holding the Home button at the same time, that didn't help either. The iPad is iPad2, computer is MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running Catalina.

Thanks in advance for your help.
